Tacos & Tortas vs. Hot Dogs

It’s 3 am in the morning, you are in Mexico City, and you’re just heading back to your hostel. What do you need at that point – No, not kebab, you need Tacos. And the good thing about them, is that you can get just as many as you want.

Mexico, and especially Mexico City is all about street food. There are small kitchens everywhere. Some have places to sit, some don’t. And there are two main things to eat: tacos and tortas. Sure you have quesadillas, enchiladas, nachos etc. But for the street kitchens, it’s about tacos and tortas. Torta is like a sandwich, very soft bread with cheese, ham or chicken etc. inside.

But at 3am in the morning when you see this taco list, you better read some Spanish. I could spot stuff like eyes, head etc. from  the menu. But thankfully we had some fluent Spanish speakers who could clarify rest of the menu, like cheek and other various body parts. So we got what we wanted.

Coming to Oaxaca after Mexico City (6h bus ride), went out in the evening, was shocked to find hot dog stalls everywhere, selling hot dogs and hamburgers. Sure you could still find tacos and stuff, but there wasn’t the same amount of those street kitchens I had gotten used to in Mexico City. So the street food seems to vary a lot in Mexico, but then again, it is a big country. I do however prefer tacos and tortas to hot dogs.
