Okonomiyaki, the Japanese pancake

[Not a valid template]

I love social food, you know, food that you share with others. I also love food that you can play with; so there is more to it than just moving it from the plate to your mouth with your fork and knife. Okonomiyaki is just the sort of food that fits both these requirements.

It’s a sort of Japanese pancake, if pancakes were even more awesome than normally, think bacon and cheese!

Abeno in London is the only restaurant outside of Japan where I’ve come across this food, and if you want something a bit different, this is a great option. Well actually they have two restaurants in London, one you can do reservations in, the other not.

The first thing when you sit down is notice that most of the table up is taken by a metal plate. And if you are clever, you’ll probably notice that it can still be quite hot and you shouldn’t probably touch it.

The way this works, is that you order your okonomiyakis; and then they bring out the ingredients to the table, mix them up, and cook them on your table. Sure they also do some other dishes (I recommend the dumplings), but the okonomiyaki is why you are here.

We opted for Osaka Mix (kimchi, pork and prawns) which is fairly traditional and London Mix (bacon and cheese), which probably isn’t so traditional, but is awesome! We went for the deluxe size for both as we were feeling hungry.

  8. This looks great – I’m going to try it out – but isn’t it a bit hot having that cooking right in front of you (given the heatwave we’re having in London right now)?

    • Yes, it does warm you quite nicely, so with the current heatwave, it can get quite warm! :)

  9. I actually hated okonomiyaki until I had it in Japan…and yes, Hiroshima does it the best 😉 There’s places in and around San Francisco that serve it, but I have yet to find a place makes a delicious version…haha.

    • I talked with our cook while she was preparing our okonomiyaki, and apparently there are different kinds of okonomiyakis around Japan, I think the one in Hiroshima is slightly different. But glad you found one you liked! :)

  10. Why has no one told me about this pancake of deliciousness, I want one!
